What is hijama (wet cupping)?

Hijama is a traditional therapy in which suction cups are applied to specific points on the body, followed by very small superficial incisions so a controlled amount of stagnant blood is drawn out. It is widely practised as a sunnah therapy and used for pain, stiffness, headaches and general wellbeing.

Most patients describe the suction as a tight pulling sensation and the incisions as a light scratch. Discomfort is brief, and the therapist adjusts suction strength throughout the session.

Is the equipment reused?

No. Cups and blades used for wet cupping are single-use and disposed of after your session. Sharps go into a dedicated container, and surfaces and linens are sanitised between appointments.

How should I prepare for a session?

Come after 2–3 hours of light fasting where possible, stay well hydrated the day before, avoid heavy exercise immediately before your appointment, and wear loose clothing that allows access to the back or shoulders.

How do I feel afterwards, and what should I avoid?

Mild tenderness and circular marks are normal and typically fade within several days. Rest for the remainder of the day, keep the dressings dry for about 24 hours, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous workouts, swimming and sauna for one to two days.

Who should not have wet cupping?

Hijama is generally avoided for people on blood thinners, those with bleeding disorders, severe anaemia, uncontrolled diabetes with poor wound healing, active skin infection at the site, and during pregnancy. Please share your full history — we will tell you honestly if it is not advisable and suggest an alternative such as dry cupping or acupuncture.
